Born in Birmingham England, I emigrated to Australia as a child in 1966. I was educated at Liverpool Boys High School and the University of Sydney. Travel adventures to Southeast Asia during my late teens sparked a life-long interest in the region, particularly in Indonesia.

My primary research interest is in the area of post-independence Indonesian history and politics, with a particular focus on the place of Islam in Indonesian politics. Other aspects of Southeast Asian history and politics also interest me. Currently I am pursuing a sideline in Australia social history.
