Doctor Russell Thomson

Statistical Consultant,
Deans Unit School of Computing, Engineering & Math

Biography

Russell is a statistical consultant at Western Sydney University, where he enjoys helping HDR students and staff with their research projects. He coordinates regular workshops on statistical analysis for researchers in SPSS, R, STATA and SAS through the Graduate Research School. For more details, and upcoming workshops, go to the CRM Consulting page.

Russell completed a PhD in mathematical statistics in 1998 at the age of 25. During this time he was awarded an Honours scholarship from the Australian Society of Statistics (Victorian Branch), an Australian Postgraduate Award and a Postgraduate Publications Award from Monash University. His PhD thesis topic was in population genetics and he published theoretical results on the expected age of mutations, as determined from a sample of individuals and their genotypic data. This theory was based on the coalescent process.  He applied coalescent theory to examine the ancestry of the human Y-chromosome during postdoctoral positions at the University of California - Berkeley and Stanford University.

With a background in both Statistics and Genetics, he went on to contribute to a diverse range of projects at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) of Medical Research from 2001-2004. His background in theory helped the team develop new techniques to tackle the analysis of real data.  Collaborations with applied scientists at WEHI gave Russell a new appreciation for applied statistical problems, and he was able to apply his statistical knowledge to many practical problems.

From 2004-2016, Russell was employed by the Menzies Institute for Medical Research (MIMR) in Hobart, Tasmania, where he developed new statistical methods that allow for the advancement of many projects. He also held a position at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) from 2009-2016 within the marine biodiversity unit. He has contributed to many high impact publications, including two nature papers (one of which he is the senior author) and he has provided statistical support to students and staff at IMAS and MIMR.
