Doctor Pan Hu

Senior Lecturer - Geomechanics,
Dean's Unit, School of Eng, Design & Built Enviro.

Biography

Dr Pan Hu is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment of the Western Sydney University (WSU). He received his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Western Australia (UWA). He has worked as a Research Associate at the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) of UWA and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Geotechnical Science and Engineering, both world-leading research centers in offshore geotechnics and geotechnical engineering. Pan also worked at the University of Melbourne as a Research Fellow before joining WSU as a Lecturer in Geomechanics.

His research interests span a range of topics within geotechnical engineering, including offshore geotechnics, soil-structure interactions, jack-up spudcans, large deformation finite element analysis, physical/centrifuge modelling, marine renewable energy foundations, expansive soil stabilisation and pavements.

Dr Hu specialises in geotechnical engineering, with a specific emphasis on offshore geotechnics. He focused on providing reliable and cost-effective foundation solutions for various engineering developments, including offshore oil and gas exploration and offshore wind energy generation. His approach integrates advanced physical modelling and numerical simulations, leading to physically meaningful and experimentally validated analytical methods that can be applied by practioners. His research outcomes have been instrumental in industry practice through inclusion in the design guidelines such as ISO19905-1 and renewal of in-house design software, which has seen successful uptake by industry partners for engineering assessments of offshore projects. He has led a few industry projects with collaborators from Australia and Europe, and produced several technical reports for industrial application.

Beyond his research endeavours, Dr Hu actively serves as a member of several geotechnical engineering committees, e.g., he is an Associate Editor for Ships and Offshore Structures and a TPC member of the International Society of Ocean and Polar Engineers. He is also a frequent reviewer for several leading geotechnical engineering and ocean engineering journals.
