Biography

Dr Morton was awarded his PhD in 2002 at the University of Nottingham for research into genetic variation and virulence factors of a nematophagous fungus, Pochonia chlamydosporia, which was being developed as a biological control agent.  In 2004 he moved to the University of St Andrews to conduct a functional genomics project to determine the mode of action of amphibian-derived antimicrobial peptides against Saccharomyces cerevisiae.  From 2007 until late 2011 he worked in the Dept of Clinical Microbiology at Trinity College Dublin studying Invasive Aspergillosis with a focus on developing improved molecular diagnostic tests and examining fungal gene expression in response to host immune cells.

Dr Morton's research is focused on the interaction of pathogenic fungi with host organisms, particularly the adaptation of opportunistic pathogenic fungi to infection of particular hosts. He is also interested in the development of improved molecular diagnostic assays for the detection of invasive fungal infections in humans.
