Senior Lecturer in Medical Microbiology,

Biography

Dr Oliver Morton is a microbiologist, with a special interest in the uses, impacts and treatment of fungal infections. He gained his PhD in 2002 from the University of Nottingham, after studying Botany at University College Dublin.

His early research focused on using fungi as a biological control agent against nematode worms, a specialised pathogen causing infection in people and animals, and plants- particularly crops. He investigated the use of fungi that specialise in attacking the worms’ eggs, as an alternative to the previously used toxic chemical methyl bromide. He then moved into antifungal development at the Centre for Biomolecular Research in the University of St Andrews, Scotland, where he investigated the properties of antimicrobial peptides produced in amphibian skin and their potential to ward off fungal infection in humans. After returning to Ireland, he began research at Trinity College Dublin into a fungus called Aspergillus fumigatus, a very serious risk for immunosuppressed patients. The hope is that further study will allow for more detailed, earlier detection to treat it before it spreads too far.

Dr Morton and his students are now studying the microbial composition of kombucha and the properties and implications of biofilms, using mixed microbial populations to recreate communities observed within the human body.

Dr Morton's research is focused on the interaction of pathogenic fungi with host organisms, particularly the adaptation of opportunistic pathogenic fungi to infection of particular hosts. He is also interested in the development of improved molecular diagnostic assays for the detection of invasive fungal infections in humans.
