Biography

Hazel is a Senior Lecturer and Academic Program Advisor of the Bachelor of Midwifery in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Western Sydney Univeristy. Hazel has more than two decades of experience as a clinician in nursing and midwifery, educator and researcher. Her research focusses on midwifery practice/education and women’s experience of maternity care.

Hazel's work is recognised nationally and internationally, with more than 50 conference and seminar presentations including 16 as an invited speaker. Hazel has a developing publication track record as an early career researcher, with 18 peer reviewed publications and a book chapter and over 20 podcast and media interviews.

Hazel was awarded the ACM NSW Pat Brodie research scholarship to develop a smartphone application in her PhD research. Hazel was awarded the School of Nursing and Midwifery Excellence in Learning and Teaching award in 2021 and Associate Deans Award for Early Career Researcher in 2022.

Hazel is passionate about improving support for women during pregnancy, birth and the early transition to mothering. In 2022 Hazel released a book based on her PhD findings 'Birth after Caesarean, Your Journey to a Better Birth'.

Hazel Keedle conducts research on effective support for childbearing women through pregnancy, birth and the early postnatal period, with a particular focus on women's experience of vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC). She is also interested in the education of midwifery students. Hazel has experience with a variety of qualitative methodologies such as narrative analysis, content and thematic analysis. Hazel has conducted a large scale national surveys for the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data and has experience in managing qualitative, quantitative and mixed method studies. Hazel is currently supervising one honours student, three PhD students and mentoring research through SPHERE.
