Speech Pathology

Biography

Dr Ellie Sugden is a speech pathologist and lecturer with research interests in speech sound disorders, service delivery, and evidence-based practice. She completed her speech pathology degree at The University of Sydney in 2012, graduating with first class honours and the university medal.

After qualifying as a speech pathologist, Ellie worked clinically for a few years in private practices in both Sydney and Melbourne. Her clinical work with children with speech sound disorders inspired her to complete a PhD investigating how to optimise outcomes for these children, with a particular focus on examining the role of their parents in intervention. She was awarded her PhD from The University of Sydney in 2018.

Ellie then completed her postdoctoral research at The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, working on an EPSRC-funded grant aiming to develop ultrasound technologies to support the diagnosis and treatment of childhood speech sound disorders.

Ellie joined Western Sydney University in Febraury 2021.

Ellie is the Practice Education Lead for speech pathology at WSU.

I am interested in investigating how intervention outcomes can be optimised for children with speech sound disorders. This has led me to investigate the service delivery contexts in which speech pathologists work, to consider the role that parents can play in delivering effective intervention, and also to investigate the use of biofeedback and ultrasound tongue imaging in diagnostic and intervention processes for speech sound disorders. I am particularly interested in exploring the active ingredients of intervention for speech sound disorders, in identifying which components (or combination of components) of intervention lead to changes in a child's speech, and in supporting speech pathologists to deliver high-quality evidence-based services.
