Distinguished Professor David Tissue

Distinguished Professor,
Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment

Biography

Prof Tissue graduated with a BSc from McGill University (Montreal), MSc from San Diego State University, and a PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He was a post-doctoral scientist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (Panama) working on tropical shrub response to experimental watering during the tropical dry season and a post-doc at Duke University (USA) studying tree response to elevated CO2 from a biochemical, physiological and ecological perspective. Thereafter, he became a faculty member at Texas Tech University (USA) before moving to Australia in 2007, where he is a Distinguished Professor in the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment.

He has developed a significant climate change research program at WSU based at the CO2 and temperature controlled glasshouse facilities and the field-based Hawkesbury Forest Experiment (HFE) site, which includes the CO2 and temperature controlled whole tree chambers, tree rainout shelters, precipitation manipulation experiment in a pasture (DRI-GRASS), grassland precipitation reduction experiment (DroughtNet), and pastures and climate extremes (PACE) precipitation and heating experiment. He has been working on tree and cotton response to climate change (elevated CO2 and temperature) and extreme climate events (droughts, floods, heatwaves) for more than a decade to assist the forest and cotton industry in developing climate resilient cultivars.

Prof Tissue is the Scientific Research Director for National Vegetable Protected Cropping Centre (NVPCC), Research Leader for Program 2 of Cooperative Research Centre Future Food Systems, Discipline Leader at WSU for Agriculture and Food Science, and Research Leader for Rainout Shelters at Hawkesbury Forest Experiment. He has been funded extensively by the Australian Research Council, as well as a long history of working alongside agricultural industries, both in the United States and Australia. He has managed/co-managed a number of large projects funded by Cotton RDC, Horticulture Innovation Australia (HIA), Forestry, Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) and Dairy Australia. He is on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Royal Botanic Garden and Trust (Sydney) and serves as editor/editorial board for five peer-reviewed journals.

I have been investigating the impact of environmental factors (e.g. CO2, water, temperature) on leaf, soil and ecosystem fluxes of CO2 and water, with a particular emphasis on photosynthesis and respiration. Our lab has significantly contributed to our understanding of plant and ecosystem response to variation in the timing and magnitude of rainfall and soil water availability. We have addressed processes that affect productivity, species composition and richness, carbon and water fluxes at the leaf, soil and ecosystem level, microbial community structure and function, and soil respiration. The novelty of this holistic approach is a better understanding of the linkages that drive ecosystem function in response to environmental perturbation.

We have applied this approach to numerous crops (cotton, peanut, onion, tobacco) and developed strategies to minimise the impact of soil water deficit and flooding, nutrient deficiency, or elevated CO2 and elevated temperature on growth and productivity.  In particular, we developed a deficit irrigation scheduling program for peanut in Texas that significantly reduced crop water use without affecting crop quality. We also developed a large high-throughput screening program that can be used to select varieties of peanut that are highly tolerant of drought stress. For the past decade, we have been assessing the impacts of climate change on cotton production in Australia. We have tested water-use efficient and thermal-tolerant cotton lines to a variety of climate conditions, including elevated CO2, temperature, and extreme climate events (drought, floods, heatwaves), and linked plant and microbial community responses to more accurately predict plant response to future climates. Important factors that also affect these plant responses include the biological (circadian rhythm) clock and ecological memory within an eco-climatic framework of resistance and resilience to drought.

Similar programs are being developed for future climate-smart forest tree plantations in Australia that are high performers in future climates, thereby protecting the forest plantation industry. Our research is often featured in print, radio and visual media in regional, national and international news.
