Biography

My research and teaching focus on the intersection of communication, technology and social change. I collaborate with organisations to design and evaluate communication initiatives that support media literacy and digital inclusion. I have worked on practice-based communication research projects in the UK, Germany, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Singapore and Australia. I am also the Deputy Chair of the Australian Media Literacy Alliance (AMLA).

I lead a media literacy reserach program and co-lead the Platform for Civic Media Literacy at the Institute for Culture and Society. I also lead a project focused on investigating and advancing adult media literacy and I am a Chief Investigator on a project designed to support the digital inclusion of families living in low income households (led by Michael Dezuanni at QUT). In 2018-2020 I led a project focused on young Australians, news and democracy.

My recent and current research examines:

  • media literacy
  • adults and online misinformation
  • digital inclusion
  • young people and news media
  • the politics of digital media infrastructures
  • the digital mapping of emotions
  • technology, evidence and human rights advocacy
  • communication and social impact

I am interested in supervising postgraduate projects on any of these topics or related areas.

My industry collaboration has won several awards. Most recetly, I won the 2023 WSU Research Excellence Through Industry Collaboration or Partnership Award.

My research approach is empirically grounded, socially engaged, and participatory while my research outputs are often practice-based and/or policy-focused. Since 2016 I have been a CI on 9 externally funded projects valued at more than AUD$2.5 million. I initiated and led 5 of these projects, involving collaborations with 12 industry partners.

My research impact has been recognised by my school who awarded me the 2019 Research Impact Award and by WSU who awarded me a 2019 university-wide research impact and engagement award.

My research has contributed to advancing media literacy and digital inclusion in Australia. I designed and implemented Australia’s first national media literacy surveys and the findings from these surveys have been used to inform several parliamentary inquiries and government policy responses. My research has been used to inform six national media literacy initiatives in the past three years developed by organisations including ABC Education, SquizKids, the National Film and Sound Archives, the Australian Associated Press (AAP FactCheck) and the Museum of Australian Democracy.
