Biography
Michael Tyler is an Associate Professor in Psychology. His main research focus is on testing and further developing the predictions of the highly influential Perceptual Assimilation Model for Second Language Speech Learning (PAM-L2), which he developed alongside his long-time collaborator, Prof. Catherine Best. With his students and collaborators, Tyler also investigates word segmentation in infants and adults, the development of speech perception in infants and toddlers, and the effects of bilingualism on cognition.
He completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Sydney (1993-1995), double-majoring in Psychology and Linguistics, followed by an honours research year at the University of Western Sydney (1996), and a PhD in Psychology at the University of Western Sydney, under the supervision of Prof. Denis Burnham (1998-2002). After postdoctoral stays in France (Laboratoire d'Etude de l'Apprentissage et du Développement (CNRS), Université de Bourgogne) and the Netherlands (Max-Planck-Institute for Psycholinguistics), he completed a final postdoc with with Prof. Catherine Best on cross-language speech perception. In 2008 he took up a position as Lecturer (teaching and research) in the School of Psychology at Western Sydney University. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2012, and to Associate Professor in 2017.
