Biography

Dr Anton Bogdanovych is an Associate Professor of Entertainment Computing and Applied Artificial Intelligence at the Western Sydney University, School of Computer, Data and Mathematical Sciences. He works at Western Sydney University since 2007 and currently teaches "Video Game Development" and "Programming Fundamentals". Anton’s innovative approach to teaching Programming Fundamentals has been recognised on a national and international level. Dr Bogdanovych has been awarded the ICT Higher Education Educator of the Year 2015 by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and received the Asia Pacific Educator of the year 2016 award by The South East Asia Regional Computer Confederation (SEARCC).

Since 2017 Anton Bogdanovych is the director of academic program for the Bachelor of Entrepreneurship degree.

Anton is involved in a number of research projects related to virtual reality, artificial intelligence, robotics and motion capture. He runs a number of Virtual Reality focused projects including the Sony Funded projects investigating the use of Virtual Reality in treating chronic pain. He coordinates the Uruk research project, which is one of the key projects of the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics. Uruk project aimes at recreating everyday life of ancient Sumerians in one of humanity’s first cities using virtual reality and artificial intelligence. Uruk project has won 3-rd place in the Artificial Intelligence  programming contest (FVWC 2011) organized by U.S. Army.  Another significant project Anton coordinates is Robot Tele-Operation for rescue missions, where researchers work on developing a real-time interface for controlling humanoid robots via full-body motion capture.

Anton completed his PhD degree at the faculty of Information Technology, UTS in May 2008 with the thesis "Virtual Institutions". This thesis laid the foundations for research on normative regulation of virtual worlds and initiated collaborations with a number of research organizations across the globe. Before starting his PhD at UTS Anton Bogdanovych worked as a researcher and software developer in the Multiagent Systems department in the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). DFKI is one of the largest and most prestigious Artificial Intelligence research centers in the world. Anton was involved in European Union funded projects related to building an intelligent agent based recommender system for elderly digital TV users (SAID), as well as developed algorithms for path classification and persona categorization for mobile device users (SPECTER).

Anton’s industry experience with Software MacKiev (the largest company that produces Macintosh versions of famous Windows titles) has helped him to get familiar with programming methodologies, tools and people management techniques employed for producing outstanding software titles. One of his products (WorldBook Encyclopedia) was preinstalled on every iMac computer sold in 2001.

The key areas of my research are Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Normative Multiagent Systems, Motion Capture, Virtual Heritage, Human Computer Interaction, Electronic Commerce and Robotics.

I have developed the concept of Virtual Institutions, including respective formal representations, supporting algorithms and technological solutions in my PhD thesis "Virtual Institutions" in 2007.

This is a fundamental technology that is being used in many research projects I’m involved with in Australia and oversees.
