Bachelor of Health Science (Health and Physical Education)
I first became interested in University through the Pathways to Dreaming program run by Western Sydney University. The program engages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Year 8 – 12 in tertiary education activities. I never really knew what I wanted to do after school but because
of this program, I knew I wanted to go to Western Sydney University.
My pathway into University wasn't as direct. I began a Bachelor of Psychology but I soon found that it did not suit me. Growing up in South West Sydney, I spent most of my time competing in sports and coaching, so, in my second year I transferred into a Bachelor of Health Science (Health & Physical
Education), and I haven't looked back. This flexibility is one of the best things about Western Sydney University.
I found that the flexibility allowed me to take control of what I wanted to learn so that I could pursue the career that I really want.
Although I enjoy participating in competitive sport, I have always been drawn to the theory behind it. The Bachelor of Health Science (HPE) integrates the science and psychology of sport with its practical application. We regularly have the opportunity to apply our learning to the context of physical
activity and this makes our classes not only challenging but also enjoyable.
I have been provided with multiple opportunities to develop my skills and knowledge in a fun and supportive environment. I have even had the chance to volunteer as a support for sports coaches. This extracurricular work gives me a valuable insight into further applications of what I have learnt
at University.
Health and Physical Education is a universal aspect in all of our lives. I know that by studying this degree I have the opportunity to pursue a diverse and rewarding career in areas such as teaching, research, raising health awareness or a career in the sports industry. This diversity is one of the
best things about studying the Bachelor of Health Science (Health & Physical Education) and I am excited to see where my career journey will go.
