Dr Julie WenDr Julie Wen

Biography

Julie is a Lecturer in Tourism Studies. Before joining the Tourism Group in the University of Western Sydney in May 1999, she worked in China as a lecturer at Zhongshan University, assistant manager of the Longshan Scenic Area in Guangdong Province, a management consultant and a hotel manager. She was also the marketing manager of a construction company in Hong Kong. In Brisbane, she worked for the Queensland Department of Economic Development and Trade, and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research. Julie undertook her PhD study at the Department of Economics, the University of Queensland, focusing on tourism in regional economic development, conservation and decentralisation.

Her current research interests include tourism management, environmental economics, sustainability issues, modelling of regional economy, China economic reform, Taoism, Asia studies, human resource management, and international business.

Grants / Current Projects

2006: researcher on the project led by Professor Sharon Moore and funded by EU on the comparative study of health care management and the impact of privation in EU, Canada and Australia.

2005: Chief Investigator(CI) of an ARC application along with Professor Sharon Moore and Assoc Prof Judith Chapman on the best practice of aged care service in Australia.

2003-2004: CI of a UWS industry grant led by Assoc Prof Robyn Bushell, I worked on the project entitled ‘The Cost Benefit Analysis of Tourism in Coastal Areas’, with a focus on the management of local Council’s role in Manly, Sutherland, and Waverton, NSW. The report to Manly Council has initiated a major change in the management structure of the organisation.

2002-2005: CI of a research project funded by the Management School, Macao Polytechnic, on the role of public and private partnership in gambling management in Macao.

2002-2003: Chief Economist and Strategist on the Snow Mountains Engineering Corporation and UWS project funded by Sydney Water on the land use of Braidwood Lands, NSW.
