The waters of the oceans cover 72 per cent of the Earth. As well as being important sources of life, energy and food, oceans play a vital role in commerce and recreation. Inshore and offshore waters, beaches and cliffs, coral reefs, islands, mangrove forests, ports and harbours are all of great significance to our survival and wellbeing. ICOG is dedicated to fostering a better understanding of the governance and management of world's oceans.

ICOG conducts interdisciplinary research into ocean governance, applicable to international, regional and national regimes.

Integrated and sustainable ocean governance through coastal zone management, marine spatial planning, climate change, sea level rise and climate adaption, with a focus on regional marine ecosystems in developing countries are focal areas of ICOG's research.
