Even if you don’t use Callista now, it’s important to understand what is changing with the new SMS because you will see these changes in many other Western systems, the website and the Handbook. The mandatory training module provides an overview of the components of the new system that will be replacing current systems and which existing components will continue into the future. Along with the change in systems, there is new terminology that you will need to embrace, such as ‘Subjects’ instead of ‘Units’. The mandatory training module covers the new terms as well as providing an overview of the new SMS.
Our new Student Management System
After an extensive selective tender process the contract for the Ellucian Banner System was signed by Vice-Chancellor Barney Glover and Andrew Belger, Ellucian Vice President Asia Pacific. It will replace the core Callista student management functionality and introduce new modules and processes to allow Western to efficiently and effectively manage the full student lifecycle from recruitment, admissions and enrolments through to the management of the progression and support of our students through their academic journey to graduation.
Why is the University getting a new Student Management System?
In early 2015 Callista Software Services, the current provider of the existing student management system in place at Western Sydney University was acquired by Tribal Group. At this point in time Tribal group informed all existing Callista SMS clients that the support for the Callista SMS would be maintained for only seven years.
Following an extensive procurement activity which commenced as a benchmarking review it was determined that Western Sydney should test the market as student management systems had evolved significantly since the purchase and implementation of the Callista SMS. The solutions available in the market place were modern, versatile and would significantly improve our administration processes and improve the student experience.
The student management system delivered by Ellucian called Banner provides a comprehensive and robust solution to deliver the student experience we envision. With the deployment of Banner, Western Sydney University will gain confidence in the admission and enrolment process, enable students to control their academic journey and continually be at the forefront of student-centred technology.
