Feed the World: WSU tackles a multi-faceted problem with multi-faceted solutions.
The issue of global food insecurity is a growing social, economic and political problem, with around 3 billion people globally unable to access a healthy diet. In 2015, the United Nations set the goal to end food insecurity and hunger by 2030, but in the six years since that goal was set, food insecurity has actually grown. The ever-looming threat of climate change is already being felt in the agricultural industry, but food security is challenged by other issues that are environmental, political, economic and agricultural in nature, making a one-size-fits-all solution far too simplistic for such a complex and far-reaching problem. But Western’s School of Science’s researchers and students are creating solutions to the problem of food insecurity in ways that may revolutionise the way food is grown not only in Australia, but also in some of the world’s most resource-challenged regions.
