Biological & Molecular Sciences Research Laboratories

This modern laboratory is a key interface cross servicing the diverse range of research that is conducted at the Hawkesbury campus including cell & molecular biology, animal science, microbiology, terrestrial & marine ecology, food & plant science & forensic biology. The laboratory is managed by a dedicated technical team. The space, design & equipment promote the capacity for collaboration between researchers and the different groups.

The design layout includes 3 main areas for microbiology, cell biology and molecular biology/biochemistry. Dedicated spaces are provided for tissue culture, PCR, media preparation, incubation, sterilization/decontamination & waste disposal, walk in cool room and wash up facility.

Researchers have access to key equipment centrally located within the laboratory that supports a broad range of research

• Static and continuous systems for biofilm production
• Research grade microscopes including fluorescence and inverted microscopes
• A range of spectrophotometric analysis covering fluorescence & UV/VIS spectrums with capacity for cuvette, plate formats & small volume DNA work
• Automatic colony counter complete with digital camera, PC & powerful software to enable speed & traceability of results
• Biohazard cabinets (class 2)
• Incubators, standard, CO2, shaking & orbital
• Laminar flow PCR cabinet
• Autoclaves, small bench style and large floor capacity
• Centrifuges, floor and benchtop, range of rotor options, ambient & refrigeration
• Ultra low temperature including -80oC freezer and liquid nitrogen
