Social media use in research

Professor Hannah Dahlen presents  'Social media use in research and how to write for  The Conversation' at the Let's Get Published Workshop

Professor Hannah Dahlen presented at the monthly Let’s Get Published workshop on the 15th of November 2017. These workshops are run to support Clinical Nurse and Midwifery Consultants at the NBMLHD on nursing and midwifery research project development and basic research publication activities. Overall there were 12 in attendance.

Hannah spoke about the increasing role and use of social media in nursing and midwifery research, and outlined the many benefits as well as some of the potential pitfalls. Platforms such as Twitter and Facebook can be harnessed to communicate ideas, link with other stakeholders, recruit participants, promote impact and increase exposure for researchers.

She also spoke about the process of submitting published work to The Conversation and its use in communicating work from academic researchers and clinicians for mainstream audiences.  Hannah described the methods used by editors of The Conversation to preserve the integrity of published material and how researchers’ work was sometimes reproduced in surprising places, dramatically increasing the audience and impact.
