Western Sydney University Bachelor of Nursing Graduate entry students got up close and personal with some of the country's finest critters during the School of Nursing and Midwifery's annual pre-Australia Day BBQ.

Approximately 135 students gathered at the campus for the celebrations, which included a reptile show, Vegemite tasting, a thong throwing game, an Australian jargon trivia competition, and a BBQ lunch.

School of Nursing and Midwifery lecturer, Suza Trajkovski, said a large portion of the annual intake for the six-week, accelerated course are international students gaining the required qualifications to practice locally.

"Because the course is so intensive, the BBQ is a little something nice we do for the students to immerse them into an Australian culture," she told the Gazette.

Representatives from Surf Life Saving also attended the BBQ, and presented the students with first aid certificates they had qualified for during the course.
