Medical Clerkships

The Western Sydney University School of Medicine provides Medical Clerkship opportunities at both Blacktown/Mt Druitt Hospital and Campbelltown Hospital.

Notice Regarding 2026 Clerkship Applications

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Western Sydney University (School of Medicine) is unable to open clerkship applications for the first half of 2026.

We understand this may cause inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. If we are able to accommodate clerkship placements for the second half of 2026, this webpage will be updated with the relevant details.

Please Note: Any applications submitted during this period will not be reviewed and will be permanently purged from our system.n corresponding with Western Sydney University.

Applications will be reviewed in order of receipt.

Overview

• Clerkship placements are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.
• Clerkships are offered for a period of 4-5 weeks only in order to develop further experience and skills in chosen disciplines.
• We do not accept clerkship students during January or December.
• When setting a start date for your Clerkship, remember that if you are coming from overseas, you need to arrive in Australia at least one week before the start date of your placement.
• Placements must start on a Monday and end on a Friday (except NSW public holidays).
• Students may indicate three preferred areas on the application form, but if offered a placement, it will be limited to just one area. Clerkship placements will occur at a single hospital and cannot be divided among different locations.

Eligibility

• Students must be in their final or penultimate year
• Have at least 2 years of clinical experience at the time of their participation in the clerkship. (2 years clinical experience means 2 years on hospital placements).
• The Clerkship placement needs to be a requirement of your Medicine degree.
• You are currently in good academic standing and have the support of your current Dean of Medicine.
• Applications must be received at least 6 months in advance.
• If an offer is made you must meet NSW Health requirements prior to your commencement.

• Be proficient in both written and spoken English (see supporting documentation below for more information)

Supporting documentation (required if a placement is offered)

• Letter of Academic Standing stating you have 2 years of clinical experience and your expected graduation date
• Academic Transcript
• Proof of proficiency in verbal and written English (students applying from non-English speaking medical schools must provide evidence) Click here for more information
• Proof of insurance - Supporting documentation from home university confirming on placement coverage

Fees

• Western Sydney University does not currently charge any administration or application fees.

Visas

• If you’re an overseas applicant, you should contact your nearest Australian Diplomatic Mission to understand how to comply with visa requirements. Generally, a Visitor Visa is sufficient.
• Visitor Visas – the Australian Department of Home Affairs issues two visas for this type of study
  1. 601 Subclass Visa, opens in a new window, also called an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)
  2. 651 Subclass Visa, opens in a new window, also called an eVisitor

Accommodation

• You're responsible for all travel and living expenses, including accommodation.
• Given the high expenses in Sydney, it's important to begin your search early and secure accommodation prior to your arrival.
