Bachelor of Health Science (Health & Physical Education)
I never thought that I would be studying a
degree in Health and Physical Education.
As a child, sport and physical activity
were a big part of my life, whether it was outside riding my bike, in the
paddock riding my horse or at the pool for squad training. However, if you
asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer would not have been what
I am doing now. It wasn't until the latter stages of year 11, when I began
researching possible study options that I came across the Bachelor of Health
Science (Health & Physical Education) at Western Sydney University. Further
discussions with my year coordinator were the spark that ignited my passion to
study this degree.
Now that I am about to graduate, I know
that I made the right decision. The past three years have taught me so much and
given me many opportunities that I never would have thought possible. The Health
and Physical Education (HPE) degree offers a blend of classroom and practical
time, which has enhanced my learning and given me a well-rounded university
experience.
As a part of the degree I have been able to
obtain my level 1 coaching certificate in AFL and gain valuable teaching
experiences. I have also been a part of many extra curricular activities while
at university. I've being a member of
the HPE year representative committee, becoming an Australian Indigenous
Mentoring Experience (AIME) (opens in a new window) mentor and working as a research assistant with
several HPE academic staff.
The most significant extracurricular
experience that I have been a part of has definitely been my work as a research
assistant. These opportunities have enriched
my university experience, giving me the opportunity to learn new skills that I
have applied to my studies. This work has opened my eyes to new career possibilities
in not only research but also academia. Next year I am hoping to study a
Masters of Research and, in the future, progress to a PhD.
Looking to the future I would like to
pursue a career in Health and Physical Education research and look forward to inspiring
other's to be just as passionate about HPE as I am.
