World-first construction doctorate offered at Western Sydney University
Western Sydney University will offer a world-first Construction Industry Doctorate Program (CIDP) PDF, 3447.14 KB established by the NSW Office of the Building Commissioner.
The new program, available for experienced construction professionals across the state, will focus on solving problems to lift performance and embed improved practices in the residential apartment market, including through industry-focused research.
Professor Mike Kagioglou, Dean, School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment, said the University was pleased to offer the innovative, hands-on program, alongside the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
“The program is unique as it’s a collaboration between institutions, government and industry and combines leading research, resources and facilities,” said Professor Kagioglou.
“As a first-of-its-kind vocational PhD program, the CIDP will empower established construction professionals to take a leadership role in improving and reshaping the industry for the future.”
Initially conceived by NSW Building Commissioner and Adjunct Professor at Western Sydney University David Chandler OAM, Associate Dean of Engagement at Western Sydney University’s School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment Associate Professor Olivia Mirza, and UTS Professor of Construction Management Martin Loosemore, the CIDP will support the Construct NSW reform and provide industry-wide solutions-focused research which will have short to medium-term benefits.
The program identifies 12 priority topics that will be explored in the program, including product traceability, contracts and project governance, digitisation, certification and assurance and embodied carbon.
“Western Sydney is a region undergoing unprecedented development and growth, and we’re proud as an institution to contribute our teaching and research expertise to support industry reform,” said Professor Kagioglou.
Western Sydney University’s extensive facilities include the new state-of-the-art, multi-million dollar Engineering Innovation Hub building located at Hassall Street, Parramatta.
A minimum period of 10 years’ industry experience is required to apply to the CIDP in construction, engineering, design, law manufacturing, business, or technology.
