Engineering & Beyond: Webinar for High School Students
The School of Engineering at Western Sydney University and Engineers Australia presents Engineering & Beyond: Webinar for HIgh School Students.
Engineering and Beyond is a webinar developed to support high school students in the Greater Western Sydney region realise their potential, and discover the world of Engineering. Students will learn about what it takes to live a day in the life of an engineer, presented by Associate Professor and Senior Engineer, Olivia Mirza. Students will also discover career opportunities, and how to get a head start on their journey to engineering and beyond.
The webinar is scheduled for 22 May 2020 at 1pm, however we are more than happy to discuss other delivery options and engagement opportunities for your school.
Teachers will have to register individual students through our form. To register, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org by 5pm on Wednesday 20th May.
In this webinar, we will have a presentation on Life of an Engineer by Associate Professor Olivia Mirza, Q&A Session and information regarding how to enrol to study at Western Sydney University.
Olivia Mirza is Associate Professor and Associate Dean in the School of Engineering at western Sydney University. From 2000 – 2014 Olivia was awarded one of 16 golden jubilee scholarships from the Australian government to study engineering in Australia. After graduating, Olivia was offered a junior engineer position at Australian Consulting Engineers and within 2 years, she was promoted to mediate structural engineer.
As Senior Engineer for Cardno Group, Olivia designed Tower 5 of the New York Twin Towers, the Frankfurt Commerzbank and One Shelley Street Sydney. In 2004 Olivia took the opportunity to work Pro Bono on the 2004 Aceh Tsunami project. The Tsunami devastated 14 countries, claiming more than 225,000 lives and displacing more than 1.7 million people.
In 2009 Olivia completed her PhD in Engineering at Western Sydney University and is now working as a forensic engineer, rehabilitating and strengthening ageing infrastructures.
Olivia is the chair for Engineers Australia Western Sydney Regional Group and representative for Women in Engineering, Western Sydney Region.
