Professional Practice Community Engagement

Get outside the traditional classroom environment on your practicum!

Offered though the Professional Practice Community Engagement (PPCE) component of the Master of Teaching (Secondary), this award-winning program enables final-year student teachers to gain valuable experience that may give them the edge when applying for teaching positions. The chance to work with young people in community settings adds an extra dimension to our graduates' teaching skills.

Some of the streams currently on offer through PPCE:

	Community Action Support - Tennant Creek NT Students work with young people at Tennant Creek High School to improve literacy, increase the confidence of the young participants and create a positive community perception of learning and higher education.
	Refugee Action Support Be a study mentor to newly arrived refugee students in selected schools in western Sydney. Participants receive two days training with the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation and are then matched with a student / school to work with them each week through the semester.
	Mentoring Indigenous Students Through the Western Sydney University Indigenous School Student Mentoring Program, students combine structured academic enrichment and Indigenous cultural awareness activities with one-on-one mentoring. Mentors help to inspire the educational aspirations, engagement and confidence of young Indigenous students, at the same time building skills and knowledge relevant to their own personal and professional development.
	Learning Choices - Next Generation Project-based learning with young people who are at-risk, with the aim to improve learning and work transitions. Projects have ranged from model car construction to song writing, from comic book writing to making movies.
	Crossing Borders - International Peer Support Students who arrive from overseas often have a struggle in their first few months at university. They might be lonely, unsure what to expect, find differences from their own country confusing, lack confidence to explore and be anxious about achieving success. This strand of PPCE has been set up to address these issues and help students settle in.

• Mittiga Program - home tutoring for pupils who have cerebral palsy
• Maximising Potential - one to one coaching with Yr 11 students who aspire to leadership
• Mentoring in Western Sydney - work in various high schools as mentors to a wide range of students
