C4SMC Industry Round Table 2019

In just over a year since a forward-looking group of industry leaders invested in the Centre for Smart Modern Construction - c4SMC at Western Sydney University a momentum is building that recognises the national interest can be served by collaboration aimed at joining-up the modern construction narrative. The first Industry – Academic Round Table of 2019 takes forward the conversation that began at the inaugural version in 2018 by envisioning a smarter, better and more effective industry. It is a quality opportunity to bring industry and academia together and discuss how both see a modern industry taking shape and how best to prepare the academic program to help deliver future-ready modern constructors who have envisioned Industry 4.0.

The Roundtable will bring together stakeholders from the public and private sectors, professional organisations and academia to deliver a smart and modern construction industry ready to face the challenges of Industry 4.0 and to create the built environment for the 21st century. Ongoing dialogue between industry and academia will result in impactful research that transmutes the construction industry.  This Roundtable session will focus on the impact of Industry 4.0 on the current status, performance and delivery of the construction industry with special references to offsite construction, supply chains and digitalisation.

Keynote Speakers

	George Argyrou Joint Managing Director, Hickory Beginning his career as a carpenter, George is one of the industry’s most impassioned leaders, driving the incorporation of Green Building, Lean Construction and new technologies into Hickory’s methodology and developing best-practice models for the construction industry. A champion of innovation; George is focused on sourcing the newest materials and methods and establishing the group’s own prefabricated building systems.
	Kerry London Deputy Dean, School of Computing Engineering and Mathematics Dr London is Professor Built Environment and Urban Transformation at Western Sydney University where she is also Deputy Dean School of Engineering Computing and Mathematics. She was the first female chair in construction management in Australia.  She has an international research reputation and is a considered a leader in construction supply chain theory and practice. She has published more than 160 peer reviewed publications, won over $4.0M and supervised 11 PhD students since 2003. She has given various international keynotes at both industry and academic conferences. She currently is a Chief Investigator on five ARC grants. Kerry is Chair of the NFP Australasian Lean Construction Institute professional association.
	Ronan Delaney Global Aviation Skills Leader, ARUP Ronan is the Global Aviation Skills Leader managing ‘Arup skills offering’ to the Aviation Industry. He has over thirty years of experience in Engineering Management of large multi-disciplinary teams, across the full spectrum of building projects from residential, high-rise, high end commercial offices, shopping malls, aviation, rail and infrastructure projects in Australia and Hong Kong, notable ones being the Sydney Airport International Terminal Expansion Projects, Brisbane Airport Domestic Terminal Expansion Projects, Hong Kong Airport Terminal 2, Hong Kong Airport Sky Pier Project, and Beijing Capital Airport Terminal 3 Project. He is an alumnus of the Dublin Institute of Technology and Trinity College Dublin.

C4SMC GRAND CHALLENGE 2019

There has been a clear reshuffling of deck chairs in Construction since the Industry 4.0 buzz kicked in. While the industry biggies are burning the midnight oil to give shape to their digital journey, their non-obvious counterparts are entering the space with already matured digital capabilities and innovative approaches to construction. The competition is stiffer and less predictable than before.

So who will be the industry leader as Industry 4.0 matures in the AEC space? The doctoral researchers at the Center for Smart Modern Construction are all set to battle it out and find definitive answers at the c4SMC Grand Challenge 2019. Be there to witness a one of a kind and one of the first ‘Research Debates’ to be held at Western Sydney University.
