Dr Ajesh George and Professor Maree Johnson from the School of Nursing and Midwifery are working with a team of researchers from Sydney South West Area Health Service, Sydney Dental Hospital and the University of Sydney to examine how to improve maternal and infant outcomes for mothers who have poor oral health in Sydney's southwest area. This research has been funded by the Australian Dental Association (NSW).


Youth Mentoring

Alison Hine from the School of Psychology has been investigating the extent to which youth mentoring programs have been successfully integrated with youth and community services. Working with her on this project is Associate Professor Diana Whitton from the School of Education. This research has been funded by the Youth Mentoring Network a partnership of not-for-profit organisations and the Australian government.

Professor Margaret Vickers and Dr Katrina Barker from the School of Education, Professor Robert Perry and Professor Sue Dockett from Charles Sturt University and Mr Michael Hyam from the NSW Department of Education and Training are researching why some students leave secondary school early. This research is funded through an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant.

Associate Professor Natalie Bolzan from Social Justice and Social Change and Sharon McGee from the School of Social Science in conjunction with the Richmond Fellowship of NSW are investigating the success of an intervention and recovery program for young people with mental illness who have a history of substance abuse. This research is funded by the Mental Health Coordinating Council.

Professor Yan Zhang from the School of Computing and Mathematics, in collaboration with Smartlink Solutions Pty Ltd., is developing mathematical and computational solutions for sophisticated e-business automated systems. Associate Professor Brett Neilson, Professor Ien Ang and Associate Professor Ned Rossiter of the Centre for Cultural Research are investigating influence on culture through creative labour and social mobilities in the Asian region. They are collaborating with researchers from Lingnan, Tsinghua and Bologna universities and the Calcutta Research Group in China, Italy and India respectively. This project is funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery grant.

Professor Esther Chang from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, together with Advantaged Care and Domain Principal Group, has been awarded a UWS Research Partnership Program grant to investigate the treatment of residents in aged care facilities who are experiencing weight loss.

Associate Professor Kate Stevens from MARCS Auditory Laboratories and Professor Barbara Tillmann from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Lyon are looking at ways adults raised in a particular linguistic or music environment acquire knowledge of complex temporal and rhythmic relations. This research is funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery Project grant.

Tracking down a biodiversity killer (PDF File 87.6 KB) (opens in a new window)
Professor Shelley Burgin from the School of Natural Sciences, together with Dr Geoff Ross of the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water, has been awarded a NSW Environmental Trust grant to track down the North American red-eared slider turtle. The aim of this project is to determine the extent of the invasion of this illegal species across Sydney's rivers and wetlands.

Dr Renu Narchal from the School of Psychology has been investigating the job-seeking experiences and challenges for migrants, refugees and humanitarian entrants from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. This research is supported by the Baulkham Hills Holroyd Parramatta Migrant Resource Centre.

Associate Professor Meg Smith from Social Justice and Social Change, and Sharyn McGee from the School of Social Sciences are examining why many young people living with mental illness use cannabis, why some develop a dependency on the drug and what can be done to educate young people about the risks to their mental health from using cannabis. This research is funded by the Mental Health Coordinating Council.
