Description

Against the backdrop of the invasion of Ukraine, this lecture will reflect on the unusual friendship between two great Russian writers, Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekov. Tolstoy is now renown for his novels, but during his lifetime he was better known for his promotion of non-violence and for his campaign against the Russian government and the Orthodox Church. Chekhov, one of the great innovators of the modern short story, was deeply influenced by Tolstoy's moral philosophy and social activism. This talk will delve into their relationship and consider the continuing importance of their humanitarian mission.
