Liverpool City Council and Western Sydney University have joined forces to host 'Ideas 2170', a series of public discussions at the Liverpool City Campus. The first talk is entitled:“South West Sydney: Education’s Field of Dreams”. Historically, educational outcomes in South West Sydney have trailed behind other parts of Sydney. Schools in Liverpool educate a large number of students from different backgrounds, including those who come from homes in which English is not the first language spoken. There is a great opportunity to improve education outcomes and connect more students with the expanding opportunities taking shape in the region. Since 2010, the rate of students in South West Sydney staying in school past year 10 is steadily increasing and, in the last five years, Liverpool has seen a 42 per cent increase in the number of local students enrolled in tertiary education. Three universities have put down roots in the city, with the promise of more to follow. Education is the key in transforming our community. What role will our education system play in South West Sydney with our unique challenges? The keynote speaker is Mark Scott AO, Secretary of NSW Department of Education. He will then join a panel of educators including Professor Wayne Sawyer, Lily Mularczyk OAM and Cindy Valdez-Adam.
