Description

NICM Health Research Institute presents Professor Jon Wardle, Director of the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine, Southern Cross University.

Join guest seminar speaker, Professor Jon Wardle, as he discusses 'Blending tradition and science in public health'.

Abstract

Evidence-based principles guiding health policy increasingly rely on both scientific methods and longstanding traditions of use. The Astana Declaration on Primary Health Care – updating the Alma-Ata Declaration as the new guiding document for global primary health – supports the active expansion of traditional health practices in meeting global health priorities, requiring health researchers to integrate traditional and scientific perspectives in a critical, rigorous way. This presentation examines the increasing recognition of traditional knowledge in global health, discusses opportunities and challenges this poses for research, and presents a research program attempting to bridge traditional and scientific perspectives to improve health.
