Schools for Sustainability
Penrith: Schools for Sustainability – A 2-day Forum to Explore the BIG issues!
Students get to explore GLOBAL + LOCAL environmental issues through a series of engaging activities and renowned speakers. It will challenge students to identify issues in the region they are passionate about and develop ideas on how your school can take actual steps to address sustainability issues. Participating schools can apply for a small grants to help turn their ideas into reality! Projects may include actions like building a greenhouse, installing a veggie garden to supply hospitality students with fresh produce, to building an outdoor learning space and much more.
This initiative is supported by Penrith City Council, Western Sydney University, Penrith Lakes Environmental Education Centre and Kingswood High School.
Successful Projects 2015
Three local high schools received seed funding from Western Sydney University to set up a sustainability project at their schools:
- Emmaus Catholic College installed a composting system so they can recycle their food waste from their food tech and hospitality cohorts, and improve their gardens.
- Kingswood High School are creating habitat for native animals including nesting boxes for possums and micro bats, as well as 'bee hotels' for native bees.
- St Marys Senior High School are creating an outdoor learning space to be used for classes, complete with vertical vegetable gardens and native plants.
