Western Sydney Matters
Greater Western Sydney (GWS) is located in the western part of the Sydney metropolitan area, and is a growing region of economic opportunity, community aspiration and environmental diversity. The Greater Western Sydney region runs from Windsor in the north to Campbelltown in the south, and from Parramatta in the east to Penrith and the Blue Mountains in the west, comprising of 14 local government areas. GWS is recognised as an area of growing national importance and has one of the fastest growing populations in Australia. As such it faces the distinctive sustainability challenges associated with a rapidly developing, culturally diverse, peri-urban region.
Our University is a dynamic centre for teaching, learning and innovation and it is important we lead the way in supporting societal transformation. In 2017 Western Sydney University became one of ten Australian and New Zealand Universities committed to developing teaching and research initiatives that support the implementation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. Taking up the challenges of the SDG 2030, we are offering new signature learning experiences for our students to engage with significant global and regional issues. They will ask critical questions about the world in which we all live and help shape the future of our societies.

RCE Greater Western Sydney (RCE-GWS) vision is to establish itself as a model of how the linked challenges of social, economic and environmental sustainability can be addressed through an integrated process of collaboration. Our partners, who include the region's educational institutions, organisations, businesses, community groups and local government, work together on tackling our region's sustainability challenges.
