Frequently Asked Questions

These courses are designed for people who work, have busy lives, or have other ongoing commitments. They are flexible, so you don’t need to come to classes or have a set timetable. We recommend around 5 hours per week for Zoom meetings, discussion board communications, small group meetings or interaction with the learning site. Weekly Zoom drop-ins are highly recommended, but they remain optional. If you can’t make the time, your tutor will record them so you can watch the session in your own time.

The Undergraduate Certificates run in a 6-week block mode. This means you only do one subject at a time. After six weeks, you have a short break and come back for your next subject. Please see the chart on the orientation page for details about dates and subjects to enrol in.

A timetable is not required, and you do not need to register for classes. The courses are predominately done in your own time. The 1-hour weekly Zoom drop-in session will be organised at the start of the block between your teacher and the student group. Don’t worry if you can’t make the session as it is optional.

When contacting the university, or university staff, by email you need to ensure you use your student email account. Email is the official communication channel between students and the university. All students receive important information regarding enrolment, fees, extensions, and results through this email account. They are not sent to the personal account you used to apply for your course. As a condition of enrolment, students must check their email accounts regularly – we suggest daily and during the block and the vacation break. To open your email account please click this link.

Commencing students can apply for their Student ID Cards online here.

Western Sydney University uses a learning platform to make accessing your materials easier. This platform is called ‘vUWS’ (pronounced VIEWS). This is the main system you will use to undertake your studies. Find out more using this link.

You can contact the IT Service Desk via:

MyIT portal (including Live Chat).

Email: itservicedesk@westernsydney.edu.au

Phone: (02) 9852 5111 or ext 5111

This is not too much of a problem. However, you will need to do well enough in other assessments, so your final total is 50% or above. Remember, some subjects have compulsory tasks that you need to do and pass in order to pass the unit. If you fail your subject, there will be another opportunity to repeat it in a future block. Talk to your Student Success Coordinator at UGCerts@westernsydney.edu.au for guidance.

We do not recommend solely doing your course via a tablet or phone. Some tasks or assessments can only be done on a laptop or a more powerful computer. In saying that, a tablet or phone is a fantastic way to access your readings or videos while you’re commuting, during your lunch hour, or on the go.

All the Undergraduate Certificates have access to free digital textbooks. These can be accessed through your vUWS site’s “Readings and Resources” tab, or within your weekly learning materials.

None of the Undergraduate Certificate courses have exams. While there might be short quizzes, these are mostly knowledge checkpoints where you can get an understanding of what you need to brush up on. They aren’t scary and they can be done in your own time (although there will be a due date). All our assignments are designed to be reflective of real-world tasks. Our goal is to give you experience in completing tasks that you would do in the workplace. All your assessments will be submitted via the vUWS learning platform. Your teacher will assist you if you require help.

During the block, the grades for each assignment will appear in your vUWS subject. You just need to click on the tab that says ‘My Grades’. If you aren’t sure where this is, please contact your teacher and they will provide you with the steps you need to follow. At the end of the block, your grades go through a formal process and are released on a particular day. You can find this day in the Academic Calendar (click the link on the orientation site). Your grade will become visible when you log in to ‘MySR’. This is the same place you register into your subjects, find out how far you are through your course, or update your personal information.

Upon completion, you will be able to receive your Undergraduate Certificate. If you like, you can attend a formal graduation ceremony and invite your friends and family too. Also upon completion, you can finish studying and start using your skills, or you can continue studying. The Undergraduate Certificates have pathways into Diplomas or Bachelors’ courses. Talk to your Student Success coordinator to find out more about your options.
