Andrew Francis, 2023
This ADP resets my research program after a period in a management role, developing new ideas to drive my research in the coming years. I will explore new branches of research focussed on papers published in 2022, and establish a research program in a new direction. One paper shows that diversity indices based on phylogenetics are not robust to extinctions, making their use for conservation decisions problematic. The other draws new links between phylogenetics and semigroup theory. The new direction I will explore is links between network theory and the shift of the electricity market away from fossil fuels.

My ADP will allow to consolidate my research and collaborations across three continents: Australia, North America and Asia. I will strengthen my research on assessment of impacts of climate change on rainfall and floods by working with two reputed professors (Prof Ouarda, INRS, University of Quebec, Canada; and Prof Sharma, UNSW) who are at the forefront of climate change and water research. I will also develop an international funding application on rainwater harvesting in rural areas by working with Daffodil International University in Bangladesh. My ADP will contribute towards water related sustainable development goals and enhance WSU’s international standing.
