Employment strategy

Western Sydney University aims to be the preferred employer of choice within Greater Western Sydney for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and to promote the benefits of inclusiveness and diversity in the workplace to all employees.

The Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Engagement (OATSIEE) has developed an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Engagement Action Plan which seeks to attract, retain and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The University is committed to Equal Employment Opportunity and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Engagement Strategy also seeks to ensure all policies are culturally sensitive.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy has led to the establishment of the:

National priorities

As a significant contributor to employment in Greater Western Sydney, the University is committed to closing the gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and has a key part to play within the community it serves. GWS has the highest number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of any region in Australia outside the Northern Territory. The 2006 Census recorded 25,699 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in this region with 58% less than 24 years of age. It also shows the unemployment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is more than two and a half times the non-Indigenous unemployment rate (5%).

Western Sydney University is playing a key role to support the Council of Australian Governments to 'close the gap' in the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in paid employment.

This includes:

  • valuing diversity of cultures in the workplace that are free from discrimination
  • access to education
  • access to continuing employment
  • participation in employment in a wide range of work areas
  • access to professional development and increase skill sets.
