NICM Health Research Institute’s (NICM) world-class research has featured in leading media outlets internationally and nationally, throughout the year with over 2800 pieces of coverage generated in 2019, reaching potential 4.1 billion impressions.

Coverage generated from October to December includes Dr Mike Armour’s paper on the cost of endometriosis; PhD candidate Christine Murray’s osteoarthritis study; Justin Sinclair discussed his paper on cannabis use for endometriosis symptoms; Dr Joe Firth spoke about diet and nutrition, as well as mental health; Professor Dennis Chang’s SLT dementia trial; and Professor Jerome Sarris spoke on Kava, and also nutrition and supplements.

Key highlights:

• NICM-Blackmores Institute PhD Scholarship recipient, Christine Murray and NICM Research Committee member, Professor Ric Day featured nationally on 7NEWS in October discussing the new clinical trial underway investigating the use a herbal medicine for the management of osteoarthritis of the knee. The story also was featured in The Courier-Mail, regional print media and The Senior.
• In October, Dr Mike Armour’s paper on the cost of endometriosis in Australia received significant coverage appearing on national television programs The Project, Ten Eyewitness News, and 10 News First as well as ABC News at Noon, ABC 1, ABC Hobart and ABC Canberra. The story was also covered on radio programs Triple J, ABC Hack, ABC Radio National, ABC NewsRadio, 702 ABC Sydney, 2GB, Mix 104.9, 96.5 Wave FM, and 6PR amongst others. The Daily Telegraph (syndicated nationally including The Courier-Mail, Gold Coast Bulletin, The Mercury and The West Australian). Additional online coverage included many, key titles such as MSN, Yahoo!7, Daily Bulletin, The Medical Republic, Warwick Daily News, The Daily Mercury, Whitsunday Times, The Gympie Times, Northern Star, The Advertiser, Daily Telegraph, The Courier-Mail, Medical Xpress, and Science Alert, to name a few.
• Melbourne’s Herald Sun featured in November an article discussing Professor Dennis Chang’s phase III clinical trial investigating SLT for vascular dementia and commencement of recruitment at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and other sites in QLD and SA. The article featured comment from Professor Chang, and also Royal Melbourne Hospital neurologist Associate Professor Nawaf Yassi. The story has appeared in The Daily Telegraph, Courier-Mail, The Advertiser, The Weekend West, The Mercury and online at Courier-Mail, The Advertiser, Daily Telegraph, NT News, Geelong Advertiser, The Cairns Post and Australian Chinese Daily.
• Professor Jerome Sarris spoke with National 9News in November regarding fish oil and vitamin D evidence for inflammation. He also appeared in December on Seven Network’s national consumer lifestyle program, House of Wellness discussing his research and clinical trials involving Kava for anxiety and improving mood and reducing stress.
