PhD (Biomedical Engineering), MSc (Biomedical Engineering – Medical Physics)
Associate Professor of Clinical Research, NICM Health Research Institute
Associate Professor Mayuresh Korgaonkar is a clinical and translational neuroscientist whose research focuses on understanding biological drivers of health and disease and translating these discoveries into clinically meaningful interventions.
His work integrates advanced neuroimaging, biomarkers and clinical research methodologies to investigate mechanisms underlying variation in health outcomes and treatment response, with a focus on advancing precision approaches to brain, mental health and broader clinical research.
Over the past 15 years, he has led multidisciplinary research programs spanning universities, health services and industry, contributing to advances in biomarker discovery, mechanistic understanding and translational clinical research. His research has attracted more than $9 million in competitive, philanthropic and industry funding, including NHMRC Project Grants and Fellowship support, NSW Health funding, and partnerships with industry collaborators, resulting in more than 125 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals.
Prior to joining NICM Health Research Institute and Western Sydney University, Associate Professor Korgaonkar served as Research Director of the Brain Dynamics Centre at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research and held academic appointments with the University of Sydney.
Building on his established work in brain imaging and clinical translation, his emerging research direction focuses on identifying upstream biological mechanisms that influence brain structure and function. This includes integrating neuroinflammation, iron biology and systems-based approaches to understand how peripheral physiology influences brain health. His current work explores translational models that connect gut–brain interactions and related biological pathways to inform future precision health interventions.
At NICM, Associate Professor Korgaonkar leads the development of clinical trial capability and translational clinical research programs while establishing new opportunities in mental health and precision health research.
