Congratulations to Xian (Phoebe) Zhou and Chris McKeon, NICM’s 2015 recipients of the Best Postgraduate Student Paper Award. Phoebe’s paper undertook a comparison of the herbal root and rhizome of Panax notogineseng. Chris’ paper focused on examining the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial of electro-acupuncture for treating chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting.

This year has been an extraordinarily busy year. We have celebrated this month 10 years of collaborative research between NICM, the Xiyuan Hospital, and the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and unveiled a commemorative plaque for the virtual Australia – China Centre for Chinese Medicine Research and Development at NICM.

NICM PhD candidate, Stephen Penman, has launched a website for a novel research project to develop and evaluate an online comprehensive lifestyle change intervention for common risk factor reduction in the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, stroke and cardiovascular disease.

NICM’s research has been rated at well above world standard in the 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia report. The Australian Research Council announced earlier in December its third Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) report, which provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality and breadth of university research.

Congratulations to NICM’s Professor Caroline Smith who was awarded Researcher of the Year at today’s Western Sydney University 2015 Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Awards. Professor Caroline Smith has made a sustained and significant contribution to establishing the evidence base of acupuncture in relation to reducing the impact of illness relating to women’s health for which she is recognised as a world leader.
