NICM’s researchers awarded for People’s Choice and Interdisciplinary research

NICM research stars Dr Carolyn Ee, Beatrice Venkataya and Justin Sinclair celebrated their achievements and awards received for research excellence at Western Sydney University.
At December’s University Awards, Dr Ee received the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Award in Interdisciplinary Research with her colleagues in the Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Translational Research Unit (DOMTRU). The unit is committed to reversing the impact of diabetes within the region and around the world. Established in 2016 and directed by a world leader in diabetes research and diabetes service organisation, Professor David Simmons, the core inter-disciplinary DOMTRU team spans five Schools and Institutes across Western Sydney University to provide holistic, evidence-based and innovative approaches to tacking diabetes and obesity.
In October, Justin and Beatrice received accolades during Western Sydney University’s Research Week for People’s Choice in research excellence and dissemination.
Beatrice, NICM’s Associate Research Fellow, Bush Medicine, presented on behalf of both NICM and the Translational Health Research Institute at the Western Sydney University Indigenous Research Forum on 25 October. Her presentation addressed Bush Medicine research conducted at NICM with emphasis placed on methods for working in partnership with Aboriginal communities and organisations and the importance of conducting research that is culturally sensitive, respectful and considerate of intellectual property. Beatrice was presented with The People’s Choice Award.
Justin, NICM’s Research Fellow, and Coordinator of the Australian Medicinal Cannabis Research and Education Collaboration, presented at Western Sydney University’s Research Impact Competition on 22 October on The Potential Use of Cannabis in Endometriosis. Against strong competition, Justin was honoured by Western’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover AO with the People’s Choice Award.
