NICM researchers recognised nationally as Australia's best

NICM’s researchers Professor Caroline Smith and Dr Joseph Firth are among the “best of the best” when it comes to the nation’s leading researchers recently identified in The Australian’s 2019 Research Magazine.(opens in a new window)
In its second year running, The Australian’s research special report(opens in a new window) uses big data to analysis and create a detailed picture of the country’s best research and the people who do it.
Listed in the leaderboard for the top 40 early career researchers, “the ones who will lead the research achievements of the future”, is Dr Firth for his research investigating “novel interventions for improving physical and mental health in young people”. The Early Achievers Leaderboard Rising Stars Top 40,(opens in a new window) showcases researchers who are less than 10 years into their careers and are the best five performers selected in one of the eight main disciplines. Dr Firth was named as one of the top five Australian rising stars for Health and Medical Sciences (psychiatry).
Fellow research star, Professor Smith was named as Australia’s Research Field Leader in Alternative and Traditional Medicine(opens in a new window) within the Health and Medical Sciences discipline.
The Australian partnered with research analytics firm League of Scholars and using Google Scholar data identify Australia’s leaders. The methodology for the Field Leader considered all papers in the top 20 refereed journals, by field, of researchers in Australian institutions over the past five years and the number of citations for each paper to ascertain the top researcher in each field. The Early Achievers Leaderboard was based on the researchers H-Index, and first author status in a top 20 journal.
Professor Smith and Dr Firth’s achievements and research excellence contributes to increasing NICM and Western Sydney University’s reputation and impact as a vibrant research-led University, with regional, national, and global impact.
