Message from the Executive Director

We will all be taking extremely well deserved breaks over the festive season and New Year holidays and we wish you all a very peaceful and relaxing, recuperative time.

This year has been an extraordinarily busy year, and despite the slowdown towards end of year break, the months of November and December have been no exception.

We have celebrated this month 10 years of collaborative research between NICM, the Xiyuan Hospital, and the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and unveiled a commemorative plaque for the virtual Australia – China Centre for Chinese Medicine Research and Development at NICM.

On the 30 November, we launched the vascular dementia clinical trial led by Associate Professor Dennis Chang, and the very next day in Sydney held our NICM Symposium on Integrative Medicine for Neurocognition and Dementia, both of which were very well received gaining wide attention from media, researchers, industry and Government.

Shortly thereafter, the Australian Research Council announced its third Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) report.  NICM received a consecutive rating of 5 (well above world standards), the top rating possible, for its work in Complementary and Alternative Medicine, in addition to contributing to the University’s 5 rating in Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences. This is an outstanding achievement, reflective of everyone’s extraordinary work at NICM. Western Sydney University grew the number of ERA category 5’s (opens in a new window) from 3 in the last round to 11 in this round.

On behalf of the NICM team, very best wishes to you all and have a restful and peaceful holiday.

Professor Alan Bensoussan
