May 2019 graduate: Beatrice Venkataya

2 May 2019

We are delighted to congratulate Beatrice Venkataya, who graduated in May’s ceremony. Beatrice’s thesis worked in a collaborative partnership with the Yirralka Miyalk (Women’s) Rangers of the Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation of northeast Arnhem Land, Northern Territory.

Building upon the relationships developed through a pilot project funded by an Early Career Researcher Grant from Western Sydney University, Beatrice investigated three plants for their bioactivity and investigated ways for their activity to be optimised in bush products. In addition to the laboratory testing, this project highlighted a working partnership with Aboriginal and academic communities, led by the Yirralka Miyalk Rangers.

Currently, Beatrice is working within NICM’s Bush Medicine Program and will be showcasing bush medicines at the upcoming Science in the Wild - Dinosaurs vs Superpowers at Mount Annan Botanical Gardens on Sunday 11 August.
