In the media

Over the past couple of months NICM researchers have featured in tier one media outlets throughout the world for their research leadership and expertise.

Most recent has been Professor Caroline Smith’s JAMA paper published in May which found acupuncture ineffective for IVF birth rates. Three particular landmark pieces of coverage included New York Times, Washington Post, UK Independent, 7 The Mornings Show and ABC . ABC National Health Reporter Sophie Scott, reported the findings online and across ABC national and state radio. Other coverage included a byline piece in The Conversation and further coverage in The Australian, SBS Online, The Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun, Adelaide Advertiser, Courier Mail, Women’s Health, Mamamia, WSFM and 2GB. The research story generated over 180 online articles, over 15 print, 87 radio hits and an AAP newswire write up. Altmetric further indicators show the paper was tweeted 250 times, and has an Altmetric attention score (opens in a new window) of 564, as of 27 June.

Attracting further wide spread global media coverage was Dr Joe Firth’s collaborative paper on exercise and depression published in The American Journal of Psychiatry in April. Coverage was received across the Courier Mail, The Daily Telegraph, Adelaide Advertiser, Geelong Advertiser Geelong Advertiser, NT News, Townville Bulletin, Cairns Post and The Mercury. Further interviews were secured with Prime 7 TV, 7 TV program the House of Wellness, 2SER, SBS, and ABC Radio National Drive. The research findings were also discussed on 7NEWS and further in prime time viewing on national breakfast TV program Sunrise with Michelle Bridges. Internationally the story was picked up in Brazil, France, UK, Malaysia, US, and South Africa. Media outlets include the prestigious New York Times, the New York Post, while UK papers such as Sun, The Mirror, Daily Telegraph London, and broadcast stations Daily Mail, LBC News 1152, BBC1, BBC London 94.9 FM, Sky News, and Brazil media outlets Jornal da Record, Diário de Canoas, and Band. Altmetric indicators show the paper’s wide reaching global interest and impact, with an phenomenal Altmetric attention score (opens in a new window) of 1445, as of 27 June. According to Altmetric data the paper received over 750 tweets and 108 news stories.

  • Professor Alan Bensoussan featured in People’s Daily,(opens in a new window) China’s largest newspaper and one of the top ten newspapers in the world, discussing NICM and our strengths in Chinese medicine reseearch.
  • Dr Genevieve Steiner appeared on national breakfast television program, the Today Show discussing dementia research and her current SLT trial and participation.
  • Justin Sinclair featured in the Illawarra Mercury discussing medicinal cannabis, which was syndicated to over 40 media outlets. He also interviewed on community radio station EastsideFM discussing medicinal cannabis and research.
  • Professor Jerome Sarris and Dr Joe Firth published on the Conversation an article about cannabis and psychosis.
  • Professor Jerome Sarris spoke with VICE for an online article on Kava.
  • Dr Joe Firth featured on channel 7's national weekend program, House of Wellness discussing exercise and depression research.
