The Potential Use of Ayahuasca as an Antidepressant: Preclinical and Clinical Studies

With a PhD in Psychobiology and a focus in preclinical and clinical studies of chronic stress and mood disorders, we invite you to join Nicole Leite Galvão-Coelho as she presents a seminar on The Potential Use of Ayahuasca as an Antidepressant: Preclinical and Clinical Studies.

Ayahuasca is a decoction made from a combination of two plants from the Amazon rainforest, Chacrona (Psychotria viridi) leaf and Mariri (Banisteriopsis caapi) vine. These components act on several pathways involved in the aetiology of major depression. Brazilian preclinical and clinical results, from a double-blind randomised placebo-controlled clinical trial in patients with treatment-resistant depression, suggest a fast-acting antidepressant effect of ayahuasca.

In addition there appears a potential link between this effect and improvements of biomarkers of depression, contributing to the emerging field of the use of psychedelic substances in the treatment of psychiatric disorders.
