Overview
The market for complementary medicines is now truly international with products and ingredients made in one part of the world, sold and available in another. Though this market is global and growing, the regulations in place to provide appropriate oversight are largely developed domestically. This potential disconnect often proves a challenge to consumers in safely making informed choices about including, or not including, a complementary medicine within their healthcare options. This presentation will explore this issue in greater detail and with examples discuss not only challenges, but also opportunities for all stakeholders, notably the research community. Specific topics that will be discussed include the role of the regulator, defining what the sector actually is, the reality in providing global regulatory harmonization, questions of evidence and how it relates to product claims, and the need for emphasis on ensuring product quality.
