Description

NICM Health Research Institute presents Dr Ruth Peters, Senior Research Scientist, Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) and Conjoint Senior Lecturer, UNSW Sydney.

Join our guest seminar speaker, Dr Peters, as she provides an overview of evidence for raised blood pressure as a risk factor for dementia, and the complexities in the evidence for reducing blood pressure to reduce risk of dementia. With her research cited widely in academic literature and by guidelines, Dr Peters industry leading work has focused on developing our understanding of the factors which increase our risk of cognitive decline and dementia. She has a particular interest in hypertension and the treatment of hypertension in older adults, and was the cognitive function lead for the award winning multinational Hypertension in the Very Elderly trial.

Overview

Hypertension or raised blood pressure is widely accepted to increase our risk of developing dementia or cognitive decline later in life, and seems to be a particularly potent risk factor when it occurs in midlife. This leads to the question of whether or not blood pressure lowering could reduce risk of later dementia or cognitive decline. This is particularly pertinent since safe blood pressure lowering drugs already exist and are used in clinical care to reduce risk of cardiovascular events. There have been many clinical trials of antihypertensive (blood pressure lowering) drugs, and a small number have collected data on cognitive function.

This presentation will discuss the results from these trials and will explore the issues and next steps to answer the question, “Is control of blood pressure our best hope for dementia prevention?”.
