A mark of excellence: NICM HRI awarded Australia’s best

8 November 2022

Western Sydney University’s NICM Health Research Institute (NICM HRI) has been identified as Australia’s top research institution in the field of Alternative and Traditional Medicine in The Australian Research 2023 Magazine published today (opens in a new window). NICM HRI’s Professor Jerome Sarris was also named as top researcher for the discipline of Natural Medicines and Medicinal Plants, and Western’s MARCS Institute Associate Professor Mark Antoniou named field leader in the discipline of Language and Linguistics.

The Australian’s Research Awards have been structured to recognise individual researchers in the top 250 list, as well as universities and institutions that are named in the list.

These accolades are the result of analysis conducted by The Australian using mostly data from Google Scholar and largely following a taxonomy in determining the 250 fields of research analysed. The leading institute in a field is found by summing the citations of all papers published in the top 20 journals in that particular field by researchers affiliated with each institute. The institution with the most citations is the leader in that field. The leading Australian researcher in a field is the individual whose papers published in the top 20 journals in that field (determined by the H-index of journals) over the past five years have had the most citations by other researchers. This is a measure which filters for both quality and impact says The Australian in their report's methodology page.

These citations reflect NICM Health Research Institute and Western Sydney University’s commitment to targeted investment in excellence over the long-term, increasing the reputation and impact of Western as a vibrant research-led University, with regional, national, and global impact.
