Dr Deep Jyoti Bhuyan is a Senior Research Fellow, Global Challenge Lead and SDG 3 Research Cluster Lead at WSU. At NICM Health Research Institute (NICM HRI), he oversees The GutBiotics Lab, which investigates the role of gut microbial metabolites (postbiotics) in health. Dr Bhuyan's research group also studies the therapeutic potential of postbiotics and phytochemicals from Australian native plants, focusing on their molecular mechanisms of action against cancer and the development of natural product-based therapies for bacterial and viral diseases. He has recently been appointed the Editor-in-Chief of Phytochemicals in Food and Medicine (Wiley).

He was also appointed the WSU Global Challenge Lead for the Fostering Healthy Communities Program in 2025. He works closely with his fellow leads to strengthen collaboration among relevant schools, institutes, and industry partners in health and medicine research and education. As part of this program, he, along with his two fellow leads, spearheads WSU as the lead on the United Nations' SDG 3 (Health and Well-being), supported by the International Association of Universities and UNESCO, guiding other international universities across five continents in SDG 3.

Dr Bhuyan also served as the International Engagement Coordinator at NICM HRI (2023-2026) to strengthen the institute's collaboration with India through research partnerships, policy development, and scholar exchange programs. His leadership roles also included NICM HRI HDR Coordinator (2023-2026) and acting HDR Director (2023).

Dr Bhuyan earned his PhD from the University of Newcastle, focusing on the molecular-level anticancer and antimicrobial properties of phenolic compounds and antioxidants in Australian Eucalyptus species. Government, industry, philanthropic and university grants support his research at NICM HRI. He has also cultivated active collaborations with more than 40 international organisations globally.

Before coming to Australia, Dr Bhuyan held the position of Senior Research Fellow in probiotic food development at Assam Agricultural University, overseeing projects funded by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. With a background in applied microbiology and cancer biology, he has extensive experience in government and industry-funded research projects in food chemistry, microbiology, and pharmacology in India and Australia.

Dr Bhuyan has published several peer-reviewed journal articles, contributed to invited book chapters, and presented his research at national and international conferences. He has also written for The Conversation on postbiotics, which has been featured in television and radio interviews and has received global media coverage. His contributions and commitment to the research community are recognised by his involvement with various external committees and advisory boards, including the NHMRC Grant Review Working Committee and FOODiQ Global. Currently, he provides supervision and guidance to 12 PhD and MRes students while actively promoting science communication and STEM education on social media.
