Research Week highlights resilience and recovery after a year of disruption
Western Sydney University’s Research Week, Monday 19 to Friday 23 October, will showcase diverse and inspiring events focused on how we can adapt to unprecedented challenges from bushfires, droughts, floods, to a pandemic of global proportions.
During a keynote address on Wednesday 21 October at 1.00pm, NSW Resilience Commissioner, Shane Fitzsimmons, who has guided NSW through many years of bushfire crises leading to the catastrophic Black Summer fires of 2019-2020, will speak about helping the people of New South Wales rebuild and recover, not just from the bushfires and the drought, but importantly, the extraordinary implications of fighting COVID-19.
This year’s Research Week theme is ‘Connect Today For Resilience Tomorrow’, with over 24 events set to cover a wide range of topical issues and challenges that address the University’s four research themes — environmental sustainability, education and aspirational change, health and wellbeing, and urban living and society.
Professor Deborah Sweeney, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President (Research, Enterprise and International) said the University's research is focussed on supporting its region and communities nationally and internationally.
“Our world-leading research aims to deliver impact and change in collaboration with industry, government and knowledge partners right across the world. We are committed to advancement of society not just locally but with impact that reaches internationally,” says Professor Sweeney.
“We are so pleased to bring 24 inspiring Research Week events to our communities to showcase the achievements of our researchers as we look to a brighter and more sustainable future.”
Western Sydney University is rated in the top two per cent of universities in the world according to the prestigious Times Higher Education rankings, and the Australian Research Council’s Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation rates 85 per cent of the University’s assessed research at world standard or above.
