High School Mooting competition brings together best and brightest

The highly contested fifth annual Kirby Cup Western Sydney University High School Mooting competition has been won by Pymble Ladies’ College.

In a gripping final, Pymble Ladies’ College and Our Lady of Mercy College, Parramatta, argued before a Bench of judges comprising of The Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG, John Landerer CBE AM and Professor Anna Cody, Dean of the School of Law at Western Sydney University, at the Garfield Barwick Commonwealth Law Courts Building in Parramatta.

The prestigious competition saw 37 high school teams from all over NSW debate a criminal law matter relating to the NSW Summary Offences legislation. Over two weeks of competition, Year 9, 10 and 11 students engaged in an advanced form of legal argumentation before legal practitioners, academics and senior law students.

The hypothetical case was drafted by Dr Jason Donnelly, Senior Lecturer at Western Sydney University, and concerned an alleged breach of the Summary Offences Act 1988 (NSW).

The University’s School of Law partnered with the NSW Bar Association whose members generously donated their time and expertise to judge the competition. Students were questioned on their knowledge of the finer points of law with judges commenting on the strength of the students' understanding of the case and their arguments.

The Kirby Cup High School Mooting competition is named after the Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG, former Justice of the High Court of Australia, and is an annual mooting competition designed for high school students with aspirations for a career in law.
