Australian film legend Bryan Brown receives Honorary Doctorate from Western Sydney University
Australia’s foremost leading man of stage and screen, Bryan Brown AM, is adding the title of ‘Doctor’ to his long list of accomplishments.
During Western Sydney University’s December Graduation ceremonies, Bryan Brown will accept an Honorary Doctorate of Letters.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Barney Glover, says the University will bestow the honorary award in recognition of Bryan Brown’s outstanding international career and his contribution to the performing arts and advocacy for Western Sydney.
“Bryan Brown paved the way for many Australian actors and has been pivotal in developing the arts in Western Sydney,” said Vice-Chancellor Barney Glover.
“With this honorary doctorate, Western Sydney University is acknowledging Bryan Brown’s outstanding body of work. We also recognise his involvement with the Bryan Brown Theatre in Bankstown and the Lebanese Film festival, alongside his work with WestWords and Bankstown Poetry Slam.”
At Western Sydney University, Bryan Brown will accept his honorary award and deliver the Occasional Address to graduating students.
In accepting his award, Bryan Brown said, “The fact that the award is from Western Sydney University means a great deal to me as the western suburbs of Sydney had a great deal in the shaping of me and steeling me for my life's journey.”
Bryan grew up in the South-Western Sydney suburb of Panania and attended St Christopher’s, Panania.
Throughout his noteworthy career, Bryan Brown has performed in over 80 film and television projects. Notable films include Breaker Morant (1980), Cocktail (1988), Two Hands (1999), Along Came Polly (2004), Australia (2008), and Beautiful Kate (2009).
He received the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Breaker Morant and for Two Hands, and was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame in 1989.
He was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award for ‘Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film’ and the Primetime Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor – Miniseries or a Movie’ for his performance in the television miniseries The Thorn Birds (1983).
In 2005, Bryan Brown was made a Member of the Order of Australia ‘for service to the community through a range of charitable organisations committed to providing assistance and support to families and young people and to the Australian film and television industry.’
