A panel of passionate, high profile thought leaders will explore the implications of both Reconciliation and Treaty at Western Sydney University's 2016 Yarramundi Lecture.

The Lecture topic, "Is a Treaty the best way to ensure the rights of First Peoples?", will bring First Peoples' perspectives to the fore.

This year, the Lecture takes the form of a panel forum and will take place at the University's Parramatta campus in Rydalmere on 24 October at 6pm.

The Moderator for the event will be Eric Sidoti, Director of The Whitlam Institute at the University.

The panel members include:

  • Warren Mundine AO, Chairman of the Indigenous Advisory Council
  • Jeff McMullen AM, journalist, author and filmmaker
  • Shireen Morris, Senior Policy Adviser and Constitutional Reform Research Fellow at Cape York Institute
  • Dr Alexis Wright, Distinguished Research Fellow, Writing and Society Research Centre, Western Sydney University

Professor Lisa Jackson Pulver AM, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership), says the time is ripe for a rich and nuanced conversation on the issue of reconciliation and sovereignty.

"There is growing discussion on the relevance of a treaty, whether in combination with constitutional recognition or not," she says.

"This Lecture provides an ideal forum for significant debate and scrutiny of this important topic."

The Yarramundi Lecture provides a forum for the discussion of issues of local and national importance. Established out of respect for the Darug people, the Lecture has become central to the University's longstanding commitment to its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Western Sydney University's campuses are spread across Greater Western Sydney and nearby areas, and rest on the traditional lands of the Darug, Tharawal, Gundungurra and Wiradjuri Peoples.
